Blauvelt, NY (Sept 23, 2009) – An independent expert panel has declared self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for RFI’s patented Chocamine® products. After a comprehensive evaluation of research studies and toxicology data, the panel concluded that Chocamine® and Chocamine® Plus are safe for use as ingredients in a variety of food products including beverages, confectionery products, cereals, baked goods and nutritional bars. According to the FDA, self-affirmed GRAS status is awarded to any substance that is generally recognized among qualified experts as having been adequately shown to be safe under the conditions of its intended use and is manufactured in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practices.
“Chocamine® has been used in the dietary supplement industry for years for its beneficial properties,” said Jeff Wuagneux, RFI’s president and CEO. “We are excited that the GRAS status of Chocamine® will now allow the food industry to incorporate it into their functional food products.”
Chocamine® and Chocamine® Plus are proprietary chocolate-based ingredients containing the compounds associated with the many health benefits of chocolate, but without the calories, fat or dairy found in chocolate candy. Chocamine® products contain several important phytochemicals found in chocolate, such as thermogenic compounds, as well as mood and cognitive performance-enhancing compounds. Chocamine® products are the only chocolate-based ingredients that combine the sensory benefits of chocolate with several of the bioactive compounds in a unique and synergistic blend.
